Our New Gallery Wall
A PTO-Sponsored Vision Brought to Life
Every once in a while, a project comes along that feels bigger than décor. This new gallery wall is one of those projects — a true collaboration of vision, support, creativity, and a whole lot of patience with cinder block walls.
My admin planted the seed for this idea months ago. Our PTO backed it generously as part of our building’s beautification, and I knew immediately it would become a place where student artwork could truly shine.
The Foundation: 30 Frames and a Big Empty Wall
We started with a long, blank hallway that simply had cork strips and it was just begging to be transformed. The plan: install 30 frames in a clean, even layout to create a permanent gallery space where student masterpieces could rotate throughout the year.
Simple idea… trickier execution.
What we didn’t fully factor in?
Cinder block walls.
The installation took much longer than expected. Every frame required careful measuring, leveling, drilling, re-leveling, and adjusting. What should have been a quick afternoon job turned into multiple sessions of slow and steady progress.
But once the frames were finally up, the wall instantly felt different — intentional, bright, and ready for art.
Adding the Glow: 10 Colorful Light Features
To elevate the display, we added ten light fixtures above the frames. They started out as simple black metal lamps, but I wanted them to feel warm and artistic — more like something you’d see in a gallery.
So out came the spray paint.
-
I coated the fixtures in a soft gold finish
-
Painted each shade in a different color
-
Let them dry in rows across my classroom tables
The color transformation alone made the entire project feel more “us.”
Instead of wiring the fixtures into the wall (which wasn’t an option for this space), we used rechargeable lights that fit neatly inside the shades. They glow beautifully, they’re remote-controlled, and they give us total freedom to set the mood.
A Collaborative Vision
What I love most about this display is that it represents a community effort:
-
My admin imagined something special for our hallways
-
Our PTO said yes to supporting it
-
I brought the creative touches and the elbow grease
-
And soon… our students’ artwork will bring the magic
It’s proof of what a school can do when everyone leans into the same vision.
Help Me Choose the Final Look
Now that everything is installed, painted, leveled, and glowing, I need your opinion:
What setting should we keep the lights on?
🌈 Rainbow
✨ Slow fade
🎨 One solid color
Tell me your vote — the gallery reveal is coming soon, and I can’t wait to fill these frames with student masterpieces.
